The Problem

Did you know that, right now, spammers are scouring the net looking for email addresses? And they don't do it by hand either. Programs called "spiders" or "bots" work 24 hours a day, tirelessly, looking at web page after web page for email addresses. When one is found, it is "harvested" and added to a master list and the bots move on to the next page. These lists are used to send out all kinds of unwanted email, from get-rich-quick schemes to questionable medicine purchases – and those are the "decent" ones, it only gets worse. Heck, they'll even sell you the email list itself (and you can bet your email address is on there)! It doesn't matter to a spammer if you're already wealthy and perfectly healthy … spammers still keep sending their junk regardless.

The Solution

Spam is inevitable in today's free-for-all internet world but fortunately, there is something you can do about it. If you have your email address listed on your site, you'll definitely want to protect it before more and more spammers are able to grab it. The Super SpamFree component works transparently on your entire site, converting every email address link from the usual mailto:user@domain.com format into one which is readable by all web browsers but invisible to spammers. For example, the email address user@domain.com gets translated by Super SpamFree into:

    user@domain.
    com

Those numbers represent the character codes for the individual letters and is an HTML standard, so compatibility with all browsers is assured. Your email links will display and function correctly, even for people who have disabled scripting in their web browser – but any bots which examine the HTML won't see any email links and will simply move on to another site. While it's technically possible for a spammer to decode this, they don't bother because there are millions of email addresses out there in the open already! The extra effort to decode the 1 in 10,000 emails which use this technique isn't worth the trouble.

Oops!

On the bitmotion site, we have our support email plainly stated on the support page. Because Super SpamFree has been used to publish the site, we've received no spam to that address. Some months ago, after making some changes to the site, it was accidentally published without using Super SpamFree. Within a month, we were seeing around five spam emails daily to the support address. The site has since been published with Super SpamFree turned on again, which will help to decrease this.

How does it work?

It is a publish component and works by going through your published pages much as a one of the bots would do and looks for all <a href="mailto:..."> tags. When it finds one, it makes sure that the link is, in fact, an email address. Then it converts the mailto: link into the encoded version and also converts the text between the <a> and </a> tags into its encoded form. No adjustment to your site is required. Create your email links as you currently do in Fusion and let Super SpamFree automatically and effortlessly convert it for you.

Will it break my other code, such as PHP or other scripts?

If you have any PHP, javascript, or any special code or HTML which isn't linked to using a standard HTML link, Super SpamFree will leave it untouched. Super SpamFree skips over email addresses which have not been linked as you may have an email address inside your page, so your existing code won't be altered.

Super SpamFree is a great way to ensure your email addresses stay safe. All BitMotion products are covered by an unconditional money-back guarantee, so there's no risk to you.
